Prague is one of Europe’s most cinematic cities, writes Laiba Saleem. With its Gothic architecture, cobbled streets, historic bridges and grand squares, the capital of the Czech Republic has provided the background for many films and TV shows. Its ability to transform into different cities and time periods has made it one of the favourite destinations for filmmakers from around the world.
From action-packed spy thrillers to historical dramas and superhero blockbusters, Prague’s streets and landmarks have appeared on screens for decades. So, are you a film nerd? Let’s explore some of the notable films shot in Prague and the iconic locations that helped bring these stories to life.
- SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (2019)

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker’s European school trip takes him to Prague. Prague’s Charles Bridge stands out the most, as it is the bridge that Peter and MJ are standing on when MJ finds out Peter is Spiderman and Peter finds out the truth about Mysterio and the Elementals. The film blends real locations with visual effects to create memorable scenes that place Prague in the centre of this universe.
2. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (1996)
Mission: Impossible featured some of Prague’s most recognisable landmarks. The city serves as a setting for the film’s opening mission, where Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) team attempts to prevent the theft of a classified list. Prague’s classic architecture and atmospheric streets match the film’s vibe of espionage and deception. Key filming locations include Charles Bridge (pictured), Old Town Square and the National Museum.
3. JOJO RABBIT (2019)

Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit is set in Germany during the final years of the Second World War. However, although the story takes place in Germany, much of the film was set in Prague and surrounding areas, taking advantage of the city’s well-preserved historic architecture. Prague’s streets, squares and residential districts helped recreate the atmosphere of wartime Europe. The city’s ability to adapt allowed the filmmakers to build an authentic setting while also maintaining the film’s unique balance of humour and emotional depth.
4. THE GRAY MAN (2022)

Netflix’s action thriller The Gray Man features Prague as one of its intentional filming locations. The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, follows a CIA operative caught in a deadly global manhunt. Prague’s mix of historic landmarks and modern urban spaces provide the perfect setting for the chase sequences and intense action scenes. The city’s distinctive character adds depth to the film while reinforcing its narrative.
