The Mayor of Leicester was unequivocal in his condemnation of Brexit as the worst disaster to befall Britain since the Suez Crisis.
Mr Soulsby was speaking today (FRIMAR1) at a mass volunteering day organised by De Montfort University along with Leicester City Council.
Students, along with Mr Soulsby, took part in the mass community service where they helped clean-up streets, libraries and community centres across the city.
Asked his thoughts about the UK heading towards Brexit from the European Union on March 29, Mr Soulsby said: “Brexit is a disaster. It is the worst thing to happen in British political life in not just decades but generations.
“The worst thing that I can compare it to – it’s even worse – is the Suez Crisis in the 1950s.”
Mr Soulsby urged the younger generations to take a stance in the Brexit debacle, saying: “I think my generation will regret it. I hope your generation will repair it.”
The Suez Crisis in 1956 was sparked when Egyptian president Gamal Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal. Israeli, British and French forces seized it back, before being forced by international pressure to withdraw.
