Revenge is on the agenda for the De Montfort Men’s Hockey team as they look to a first ever Varsity win this month.
They have never beaten University of Leicester, but after leading last year’s varsity 2-0 and coming up short, left back Laurie Harmsworth is eyeing an historic victory.
Harmsworth said: “They are a really good team, but we think we can cause an upset and with home advantage it will be tight.”
The attacking left back, who has scored 3 goals this season, is hoping for a great send off for the older players in the team.
“The core of our group is made up of 3rd years, so this is their last shot after coming so near last time.
“We lost in the last ten minutes so we want to rectify that.”
The team have been taking on extra fitness sessions in a bid to improve their stamina and turn the tide on their opponents, who are two leagues above them.
University of Leicester sit 2nd in Midlands 2B, whilst DMU are 3rd in Midlands 4B.
Having fractured his finger recently, Harmsworth says he will play through the pain, and is hoping they can field the strongest team possible.
He said: “ We have had a few injuries lately, but hopefully we will have a fully fit squad for the big day.”
A crowd of over 100 people is expected for the game at St. Margaret’s Pastures, Leicester, at 2.30pm.
