LED screen refused permission in Leicester’s Evington Road

By Laiba Saleem

Leicester City Council has refused plans for an illuminated LED advertising screen in Evington Road over concerns about its size, brightness, and impact on the street scene.

The proposal involved installing an internally illuminated LED screen inside a first-floor office window on the busy shopping road in the east of the city.

According to the application, the screen was intended to display community and charity information for Ramadan Radio, alongside local events, safety messages, and some sponsored advertising.

The applicant argued the screen would automatically adjust its brightness, change content smoothly to avoid distracting drivers, and would not interfere with traffic signs or project onto the street.

They also pointed to similar screens approved elsewhere in Leicester.

However, council planners said the screen would create visual clutter at a high level and harm the appearance of the building and the surrounding area.

The applicant now has eight weeks to appeal the decision.
