Leicester students call for improved bus services across city

By Mollie Hinds

Students in Leicester are asking for improvements to bus services, saying unreliable timetables and rising fares are making it harder to travel across the city.

Many rely on buses to commute to university, part-time jobs and placements.

However, some say late arrivals and overcrowding have become increasingly common. Others raised concerns about evening services, particularly for students working late shifts.

Tom Reynolds, a second-year student at De Montfort University, said: “Buses are meant to run every ten minutes to 20 minutes, but sometimes you’re waiting half an hour. When you’re paying more for tickets, it’s frustrating.”

Nadia Khan, 20, who studies at the University of Leicester, said: “If you miss the last bus, you’re stuck paying for a taxi. It doesn’t feel safe or fair.”

Students say better communication and more consistent timetables would make a significant difference.

Arriva and First Bus have previously said driver shortages and traffic congestion affect reliability, but that they are working to improve services.
