DMU hosts Remembrance Day ceremony

Staff and students gathered outside Newspaper Square in Leicester today to participate in the annual Remembrance Day service.

The event took place on De Montfort University campus (DMU) at 11 am on the 11th of November, when a two minute silence was held in memory of those who lost their lives in World War I, World War II, and all conflicts which have occurred since.

Megan Rowe, a part of the events and marketing team at DMU, said: ‘’Remembrance Day is still very important to me because most of my family were in the armed forces.

“My uncles went to fight in Bosnia, and my dad went to fight in Northern Ireland. Joining the armed forces wasn’t for me though.’’

Dan Cole, a part of the innovation communications team, added: ‘’If I was asked why people should take part in Remembrance day services, I would say to learn the history about what has happened previously. Some people just don’t care however, you can’t force anybody.’’

Before the silence, the university’s vice – chancellor, Katie Normington, gave a speech about the meaning and importance of Remembrance services.
