Leicester fashion student uses university project to highlight cultural identity

By Lou Ward

When a fashion communications and styling student was tasked to create an editorial based on a news article, she took it upon herself to highlight her cultural identity.

For her De Montfort University course in Leicester, Sanya Ram creates a narrative for fashion items and uses them in a way to convey a story.

“As a second-generation immigrant, sometimes I didn’t feel welcome in my own home and that I wasn’t English… enough”, she said.

With this assignment, she was able to bring personal elements of her home life into the course.

“I was encouraged by my peers to include and embrace my cultural identity,” she stated. “I challenged my heritage and feelings into my work.”

Sanya hopes that she can inspire others to be proud of their individuality, whether it is through the use of fashion or not.
