The Sound of Music, sleigh bells and schnitzel are set to be some of Leicester’s favourite things this Christmas season, writes Jess Bourne.
The tills will be alive for a new Made at Curve production of the classic musical, which marks the 60th anniversary of the original film’s release. It will feature the hits of Rogers and Hammerstein, the creative powerhouse behind the 1959 Broadway show – including Do-Re-Mi, My Favourite Things, Climb Ev’ry Mountain and The Sound of Music itself.
The show follows the story of Maria, a nun who is sent to look after the von Trapp children. She soon learns Captain von Trapp’s is a strict man, with strict orders for his children. Over time, Maria is able to successfully capture the children’s hearts and over time, Captain von Trapp begins to soften too. But their love is shattered when he is commanded to report for duty in the German navy and together they must flee the Nazis and embark on a dangerous journey.
“The life and experiences of Maria and the von Trapp family feel as fresh today as they must have done when Rogers and Hammerstein’s perfect musical first leapt onto the stage 60 years ago. The Sound of Music really is one of the greats and we are beyond excited to produce the show at Curve for Christmas 2025,” said Chris Stafford and Nikolai Foster, Curve’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director.
“There aren’t many hills around Leicester’s Cultural Quarter, but the streets of our city really will be alive with the sound of music this Christmas, as families and friends come together to share this magical brand new Made at Curve production of this incredible musical.”
The Sound of Music opens on Saturday, November 22 and the final show will be on Sunday, January 11. Tickets are on sale now, ranging from £10 to £32.
The run features a number of accessible performances – including BSL interpreted, audio-described and dementia friendly shows.
