Culture Kick: Michael Abiola-Leigh

Students on De Montfort University’s Music, Film and Entertainment Journalism module pick the films, plays, music, TV shows and books that shaped them

My favourite film

The first Transformers film. Growing up as a big fan of the Transformers cartoons, you could only imagine my excitement in 2007 when Michael Bay produced a live action film – even though I was four years old at the time I remember it being the best, coolest thing ever. Even now as an adult I find myself going back to watch it now that I can finally understand all the jokes and innuendos.

My favourite TV show

My favourite show would have to be EastEnders. Growing up in the south east side of London, a lot of the story lines are relatable and the accents resemble voices I would hear around me. So when I watch EastEnders it feels like I’m just down the local pub earwigging in on everybody’s gossip.

My favourite band/song

I’d say at the moment my favourite song is I Walk Alone by the band Saliva. Growing up a big fan of professional wresting I fell in love with the theme songs of the WWE superstars that I would watch on the TV, and my favourite of all of them was Dave Batista’s entrance music, when that first guitar riff comes on heavy and unforgiving…chills. I always just picture myself emerging out of the curtain to the screams of 15,000 cheering fans about to put my world heavyweight championship on the line…

My guilty pleasure

I wouldn’t even call this a guilty pleasure, just a pleasure: professional wrestling. As I’ve grown older I’ve developed a new-found love and appreciation for professional wrestling, knowing how much these superstars sacrifice and put their bodies on the line just for the purpose of telling a story and entertaining the fans. Seeing and understanding the passion they have for the business is truly inspirational.

The lyric I love
“Cause we are the ones that want to choose, always wanna play but you never wanna lose” a lyric from the song ‘Aerials’ by System of A Down, I love this lyric because I feel like it applies to so many of us being that us as humans are all playing this game called life and there are so many possible outcomes but nobody is prepared for the worst or least favourable outcome.

The instrument I wish I’d learned

The electric guitar. Every time I’m listening to one of my favourite bands, whether it be Metallica, or System of A Down or even Nirvana, I always fantasise about being able to play those riffs.

I still remember the first time I heard Iron Man by Black Sabbath. That riff always sends chills down my spine and every time I hear it I so badly wish that I knew how to play guitar.
