Music for Palestine charity gig planned in Leicester

By Charlotte Cain

A student-run company is hosting a charity gig next month to raise money for Palestine.

Music for Palestine is being hosted by 3rd Quarter on Friday, February 7, at the Old Moses Cabin in Frog Island from which all the money will go to Save the Children’s Gaza funds.

The event will also include a Palestinian cookout and exhibition of how the public can help in Gaza.

Almost a million children live in Gaza and their safety is constantly threatened. The Save the Children charity works to protect these children from violence and abuse, working mainly in the West Bank.

The gig lineup includes bands such as Big Sugar’s Jam Band, Value of Nothing, Injury Detail and Misskicks.

Misskicks have done gigs for Palestine in the past and are advocates for Palestine on their social media accounts.

The company was started a few years ago when it ran a DIY festival called Wastefest to celebrate a local skatepark called Wastelands.

One of the organisers of the event, Roz MacGregor-Devlin, said: “Some guy named Stevie, and he built the entire thing from the ground up and now it attracts the local kids, skaters and lots of people.”

Wastefest was a two-day event with more than 20 bands hosted on a former factory site turned skatepark near Frog Island.

Roz said: “We’re hoping to make Wastefest a yearly thing.”

The organisers of the event decided to make 3rd Quarter off the back of Wastefest’s success.

Music for Palestine is one of many planned events this year for 3rd Quarter.

Roz said: “We are planning to do a goth-themed nightclub, cabaret and potentially Oktober fest in Abbey Park.”
