Oadby and Wigston Lib Dems bid to stop takeover of borough’s council

By Tom Cameron

Oadby & Wigston Liberal Democrats have created a petition to try to stop the takeover of the borough’s council into a singular authority for Leicestershire.

The petition was created in the wake of the Labour government’s proposals to merge district and borough councils into bigger single authorities.

“It’s crucial that democracy and decision-making stay local to our area and are not made by a remote Labour Mayor in Leicester Town Hall,” the petition reads.

The leaders of Oadby & Wigston Borough Council and Harborough District Council, Samia Haq and Phil Knowles (both Liberal Democrats) released a joint statement about the proposal on January 10.

“This process of devolution is not mandatory, just an expectation of central government, and MPs are not challenging that. Why?

“We are very clear that the Harborough district and Oadby & Wigston borough are not broken. We deliver valuable services and have on-going plans to continually improve and transform our services for our residents and local communities.”

The petition can be found on the Oadby & Wigston Liberal Democrat website.
