Popular Leicester music venue 2Funky is setting up to celebrate 28 years of business later this month.
First launching as a music record store in Leicester city centre, owner Vijay Mistry set out to expand the business and did so by creating 2Funky Music Complex in New Park Street.
The idea was to create something catchy, memorable and ‘funky’.
2Funky started as a record store and eventually ventured into workshops, arts, radio purposes, comedy jams and much more.
Vijay highlighted the importance of having an environment that was suitable for people to enjoy events.
“We were doing so many projects and events across the city that I always wanted our own space,” he said.
“When the music café became available, I jumped at the chance in 2015. I then purchased three of the venues over the next few years naming them the 2Funky Lounge, 2Funky Kitchen and finally the 2Funky complex.”
The complex offers a whole range of opportunities for businesses to thrive in with services varying from private hire, live events and club nights to festivals, workshops, bar meetings, music videos and street food events.

Describing the main highlights of 2Funky over the last 28 years, Vijay said: “Hosting huge artist name events, running one of the best record stores for black music in the UK, organising Leicester’s best dance crew and Midlands’ best dance crew events, running our own radio station and winning the 2024 Leicester’s best entertainment venue via the Best Bar None Awards.”
Over the years, 2Funky has played host to some very big names throughout music such as Akala, Sugar Hill Gang, General Levy, Mica Paris, David, Rodigan, Donaeo, Julian Marley, Kabaka Pyramid, LTJ Bukem and Sammy Virji.
