DMU sustainability hosts Grow Your Own to inspire students to get planting

By Gemma West

De Montfort University’s campus-based allotment has been reeling students in to get their hands dirty and learn about food production.

The Grow Your Own event on Wednesday(MAY22) was cut short due to heavy rain, but organisers are scheduling to be back every two weeks from that date.

The allotment is open to all staff and students who are interested in learning about gardening.

It was first opened in 2022 at Castle View, but has now moved behind the Queen’s building.

Hardening off: The plant nursery

Covid-19 caused major setbacks to the members of the Envirogreen project back in 2022, so the plans for the allotment took a while to get properly up and running.

@sustainabledmu on Instagram are frequently promoting planting events to get people to try something new and take part.

Since the re-opening at the new location, the allotment has thrived and fruit and vegetables are now in bloom.

Ripening: Fresh strawberries almost ready for picking
