An awareness event was held today(THU,MAY23) to help and support De Montfort University students to avoid the harmful effects of gambling and gaming.
The YGAM awareness event was held this afternoon at the Pod @ DSU, in the campus centre building, with a Teams meeting held online on the same day and time.
Students were able to visit the stall and ask questions or get support on the day.

Joelle Callis is the DSU advice and wellbeing coordinator and organiser of the YGAM Gambling and Gaming awareness event.
“This event is here to help students to be aware of the harms of gambling and gaming, as well as understanding, and also sign-posting students in the right direction,” she said.
Joelle contacted the YGAM company to make this event happen because gambling and gaming has been a problem among the student population and the YGAM company is known for helping people avoid the harmful effects of gambling and gaming.
Gambling and gaming can become an addiction for many people, including students, which can become a serious problem which affects their lives.
A survey of 2,000 students across the UK revealed that 71 per cent had gambled in the last 12 months (Survey from YGAM.org).

Some students are not aware that they may have a problem, and this event aimed to help them become informed and get the appropriate help
However, some might feel shameful and not get the appropriate help they need, nor to reach out. Support is available for students at the university if they need it.
Joelle added: “There is nothing to be ashamed of and there is support for you if you need it.”
