Social kitchen is back at De Montfort University food village for students to develop cooking skills

By Sara Doktorova

Students will be getting free lessons on how to make easy-to-cook recipes as well as have fun at a social kitchen being held later this week.

They are invited to the social kitchen taking place this Thursday(MAY23) at the De Montfort University (DMU) food village from 4.30-5.30pm.

Learning: students get tips from head chef Dawn Baker

Alexsandra Adamcyzk, 22, is student engagement marketing manager at the food village who is trying to engage more with students.

“I’m extremely happy that these cooking lessons are free for students,” she said.

She aims to give them more opportunities to do something more than just going to university lessons, which is why she started organising the monthly cooking classes.

Already 14 students have said they will attend this Thursday’s cooking lesson.

Alexsandra and her team have previously organised six or seven of these social cooking classes this year, which are supported by Coke, one of the food village’s main suppliers, and every time gathered about 10 students.

Recently she has been posting more about these events on social media.

The head chef for this event is Dawn Baker and the supporting chef is Mike Ayton.

Dawn helps with looking for recipes and getting it all done from the kitchen organisational side, while Mike is there to cook and support students, and Alexsandra is there to lift the mood with laughter and to film content.

Alexandra and the chefs try to find easy-to-follow recipes so that the students can re-make them in their homes.

Yum yum: students enjoy a treat at the DMU food village

Alexsandra added: “During the social kitchen we always accommodate dietary requirements, consistently providing vegetarian meals to demonstrate how easy it can be to transition to more plant-based diets.

“I always send a form for attendees to understand their dietary requirements.”
