New language sessions invite students to embark on weekly linguistic journey to China

Students are being urged to join a new series of lessons at De Montfort University in Leicester to master the basics of speaking Chinese.

As China is now the second most populated country around the world, the number of people interested in learning Chinese has increased rapidly.

The Confucius Institute at DMU is encouraging students to join language classes in order to learn and improve their Chinese knowledge.

Xiaohong Dan (known as Stacy) is a member of the Confucius Institute team who organises the Chinese language sessions on campus.

“We have four different kinds of culture sessions,” she said. “You don’t need to go through a certain procedure to register.”

The free sessions offered include:

Chinese Character on Tuesdays – focusing on mastering the basic knowledge and practical skills of Chinese language.

Survival Chinese on Wednesdays – teaching simple Chinese expressions in order to be able to communicate the basics.

Kelaidoscope of China on Thursdays – covering traditions and etiquettes as well as various elements of Chinese culture.

Travel in China on Fridays – offering a virtual opportunity to travel through the cities of China and discover their secrets.

Stacy said learning a new language makes you more confident and gives you another life perspective.

“It just opens a new window,” she said.

The sessions are held in the Vijay Patel Building and everybody is more than welcome to attend. To book a place, please email ci@dmu.ac.uk or xiaohong.dan@dmu.ac.uk.
