Care leaver Holly took a big step in her life when she moved from London to Leicester in order to start her new path studying fashion at De Montfort University.

“I’ve always had to be quite independent but it was still nerve-racking,” she said. “’My mind was on overdrive.”

Holly added that she feels like she has finally ‘found herself’ since coming to university.

“I’m so happy and content, I have a clear mind and can really focus on my degree and future,” said the second year student.

She described getting into university as being such a big achievement for her, given all the obstacles she has had to tackle throughout life.

“I’m so proud of myself,” she declared.

“Fashion has always been a passion of mine, the opportunities that have risen for me already have been mind-blowing. I love being able to show my creative side and bringing my ideas to real life.”

She said that she has always lacked faith in herself and never expected to get into university as she had never had any kind of stability in her life, but since going to university, she has seen so much growth in herself.

“I couldn’t be happier; I’m studying something I really love and I’ve finally found my forever friends,” she said.

“I’m excited for what my future holds.

“I’ve learnt your past doesn’t define you and it certainly doesn’t dictate your future, we all have what it takes.”
