March will be exciting for De Montfort University Dance Society as its members will compete against other English universities in dance, including a contest today(SAT,MARCH12).
DMU will compete within the categories of jazz, lyrical, contemporary, ballet and commercial.
First year Fashion Design student Eve Harding has 17 years of experience with dance and decided to join the society to keep her fitness up and make friends.
Eve is one of nine dancers who will compete for DMU in the commercial category.
Eve said: “I am absolutely buzzing. I am so excited.
“Obviously you get nervous, but the nerves will not kick in until we get there. For now, it is just pure excitement, I cannot wait.”
DMU dance society is one of the bigger societies in DMU and offers ranges of dance classes every week taught by elected students.
Anyone who is looking for joining an active society is welcome no matter what previous experience with dance.
The society does activities together, i.e., Christmas dinners and social nights when they get to know each other better.
Preparations for the competitions began before Christmas where all dance classes during a week’s time were run as auditions.
A few weeks later troops were selected for the five dance categories DMU will compete in. Since then, DMU Dance society has prepared with rehearsals.
The Friday before the first competition all dance troops from DMU will get together and watch each other’s performances for the first time and cheer each other on.
Eve continued: “I am not sure what to expect, competition day will be long but it is worth it as we will look at performances by other universities when we are not on stage.”
On Saturday, March 26, DMU will host a dance competition in New College Leicester, and everyone is welcome to come and cheer the troops on.
