The shortlist has been revealed for this year’s award for the best magazine cover designed by journalism students at De Montfort University, Leicester.
Five eye-catching covers made the cut for the annual prize, which rewards excellence by students on a third-year module on the Journalism degree at DMU.
The prize will be judged by Carl Loben, editor-in-chief of DJMag, the world’s leading electronic music magazine.
Groups of students create glossy magazines using industry-standard software in a final-year practical journalism assessment at DMU. The task gives each of them the chance to display a nose for good stories, an ear for a great quote and eye for page design and an all-round flair for feature writing.
The shortlisted magazines are:
Callisto: created by students Sam Bethune, Ryan Blacklaws, Omar Ibrahim, Emily Pratchett
Chaos: created by students Aleksandra Brzezicka, Kinga Ludwin, Gemma Ross, Rosie Vacciana-Browne
Embrace: created by students Jessica Bradley, Chloe Martin, Jessica McLeod-Urquhart
Gents: created by students Vincent Chen, Enoma Iduseri, Sofia Luis-Hobbs
Thrive: created by students James Cannell and Naomi Dann
“Each year, the quality of the magazines submitted by our students seems to rise,” said Journalism programme leader, Brian Dodds.
“It’s a testament to the ability, enthusiasm and hard work of our talented students that they produce such professional-looking magazines – and even more impressive that this year’s work was produced in the midst of a lockdown.”
The winners, who will share a £200 prize, are due to be announced at the end of next week.
