After weeks of campaigning, the evening of Wednesday (11MAR) brought the results of the Students’ Union Officer Team elections at De Montfort University.

In a results night held at the Students’ Union building on campus centre, a whole host of candidates found out their fate, and whether or not they had been elected by their peers to hold an Officer role for the 2020/21 academic year.

Several roles were up for grabs, spanning positions such as Welfare Executive, Union Development Officer and part-time Liberation Representatives (among others).

DMU students had been voting for one candidate in each of the roles, choosing who they feel are best to represent them over the course of the next year.

This year, the Students’ Union election team were especially creative with regard to encouraging their peers to vote, setting up booths in the Food Village and SU headquarters as well as a mobile polling station that has travelled around campus.

There were also incentives to entice voter turnout, such as the giving away of free sweets and DMU merchandise.

Tom Guyton-Day, who has been elected as one of six NUS delegates, said: “I am ecstatic to be chosen by my fellow students to represent them.

“It was a long and at times tiresome campaign, but I couldn’t be happier with the result.

“I am looking forward to working closely with the DSU team and helping improve student life.”

As expected, Demon Media provided brilliant live coverage of the evening, providing students and those interested by the results with updates throughout the evening in an online stream and blog.

The full list of those elected as Executive Officers is available on the DSU website.

With fresh faces and new ideas joining the Students’ Union, it is shaping up to be yet another exciting and success-filled year for De Montfort University.
