De Montfort University is hosting information talks for first year students interested in taking part in a placement year whilst at the University.
Recently, the Computing, Engineering and Media faculty hosted their event with Business and Law also talking to the students within that faculty.
First Year Law and Criminal Justice student Shivani Maisuria wants to take part in a placement year in London to help achieve her dream of becoming a lawyer.
She said: “A placement year would enhance my skills and it is a good opportunity for me.
“I will be able to understand what it is like to be a solicitor in the real world.”
It is only early days for first year students, but the placement team are sowing the seeds for the prospective students to help ease their decisions about their placements.
Shivani, 18, said: “The talks have got me thinking about a placement year through the group talk and also careers meetings and lectures focused on our future careers.
“They brought in a previous student who talked about her experiences on her placement.
“It has definitely motivated me.”
There are many leaflets being distributed around the DMU campus as well.
On the DMU website, there are other options available to students that want help with their placement year.
According to the website, MyGateway “advertises over 1000 vacancies every academic year on the student portal” and also gives helpful information about potential meetings and mock interviews you can have with the placement team.
Finally, the website is also home to other case studies from students who have completed their own placements with DMU which offer tips and advice for placement prospects.
Below is a short interview with Mitchell Parker, a Mechanical Engineering student who is also interested in partaking in a placement year.
