Alarms started ringing at around 7pm, however students did not leave the building until roughly 7.20pm as they believed it was one of many drills.

Chemistry student Ada stated: “We’ve been told it was a fire on the second floor. The alarm was going off for quite some time, around 7, and we’ve been stood outside for an hour waiting to go back in.

“I could smell smoke from my fourth floor flat.”

Adding to this, management student Mariyianna said: “The fire engines were already here when we got downstairs, I could smell smoke after the alarm went off.”

Five engines and two police patrol cars attended the scene and cordoned off the area while fire fighters dealt with the situation.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, as is the damage suffered to the student housing.
