A vigil is being held today (FriDEC6) in the Students’ Union to remember the transgender lives that have been lost due to transphobia.
The LGBTQ+ society have created a space for students to come and pay their respects with paper to write their own written tributes, alongside electric candles and some of the names and stories of transgender people whose lives have been lost.
The vigil also calls on those not part of the community to understand their privilege and become ”allies” of transgender people.
The LGBTQ+ society defined an ally as someone who ‘understands the dangers that trans people face, are aware of their power and actively work to create safe spaces.’
Students on campus today are able to pass by and learn a little about some of the struggles faced by the trans community and leave supportive messages.
