Big success for DMU Fine Art students as they host annual auction

By Luke Norman

Nearly £3,000 was raised at a successful annual Fine Art Auction on Monday (FEB25) run by students on De Montfort University’s (DMU) BA Fine Art course.

The event in the Vijay Patel building was hosted to help raise money for their degree show catalogue that is taking place on June 15 and it succeeded in collecting the majority of their £3,000 target.

The auction was run by professional auctioneer Dickon Dearman, of Churchgate Auctions, and was part of DMU’s 2019 Cultural Exchanges Festival, which is running this week.

Lauren Page, chairwoman of the Fine Art student committee, was helping to run a DMU event for the first time but was determined to make sure it would run smoothly.

Visitors scrutinise some of the work on show before the auction

She said: “It had the best record to any event that has been held at DMU.”

About 80 people showed up to bid on the artwork that was on show for the auction.

The auction also managed to sell all of the 152 pieces that were up for auction for the first time – which has never been done at the annual event before.

The Fine Art students will continue to run events such as bake sales and sponsored events to make sure that they raise all of the money that they need to cover the full costs of the Fine Art Degree Show Catalogue later this year.

Miss Page said: “We still need to raise £300.”
