The Varsity rugby match between De Montfort University and the University of Leicester has been postponed due to problems with the pitch at Welford Road.

The rearranged fixture will now take place on Monday, April 30. The match was due to be played at the home of the Leicester Tigers tomorrow (Thursday, March 8).

In a statement on Twitter, DMU Rugby said that the match wasn’t going ahead “due to the conditions and the importance of upcoming fixtures”, whilst in another statement, DMU’s Vice Chancellor Dominic Shellard said that “had the games gone ahead, the Welford Road pitch would have been unplayable for a month.”

When asked about the effect the fixture change would have on the Demon coverage, Chris Leach, Demon TV Station Manager, said: “It has affected us to the stage that we’ve already agreed crew and agreed with the ground for us to all have press passes to access Welford Road early.

“This then means that we’ve got to reorganise that with the Tigers and organise a new crew for any others who can’t make it. I believe the new date will be within a DMUGlobal trip to Japan.

“It has been an issue that we’ve encountered in the past. I remember in my first year we had the rugby varsity cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch so we are used to it, but we’re very appreciative to Welford Road for giving us the opportunity to go live from there anyway.”

When asked about the effect that this date change may have on the attendance at the match, Chris said: “In the past it hasn’t, but the issue is that Varsity creates a real buzz, and a lot of the attendance is spawned from the buzz that it creates, so I fear there may be a small impact on the attendance.”
