Rugby Varsity match cancelled due to waterlogged pitch

De Montfort University has announced that, due to concerns about the condition of the pitch, the Rugby Varsity matches have been postponed.

The decision was taken by Leicester Tigers as they aim to keep their pitch in good condition for their remaining games this season.

The re-arranged fixtures, originally due to have been played at the Tigers’ Welford Road ground on  will now take place either in late April or early May, with a date yet to be confirmed.

This will be a disappointment for many, with the rugby matches being the highlight for many of the Varsity season.

Varsity sees students from De Montfort take on their rivals from the University of Leicester. Students will compete in a variety of sports, from archery to lacrosse to basketball.

Andre Cowen, head of sport at Demon FM, was particularly disappointed with the news, with the station set to cover the rugby matches live on radio broadcast.

Andre said: “I’m disappointed as it means that Varsity isn’t as compact and the vibe Varsity gives can be lost, especially if Varsity has already been won/lost overall.

“But Welford Road need to protect their pitch for the season otherwise it would be sub-standard for their players and the league. So I understand from both sides, it’s just unfortunate.”

This does not distract from the Varsity week however, with all other sports still going ahead, including the basketball at Leicester Arena and many other sports. Students are encouraged to go and support their university in the events, with Varsity launched at an event on Tuesday evening.
