The Silverbacks have a 100 per cent record in the Midlands 2A League this season

Excitement is building among the DMU Silverbacks ahead of the futsal team’s Midlands Conference Cup semi-final.

The men’s 1st team travel to the University of Warwick to play their 1sts on Sunday, February 25, where a place in the final against Loughborough 2nds, Leicester 2nds or Worcester 1sts will be at stake.

While their opponents lead the Midlands 2A league having won all four matches, head coach Martyn Ware believes his in-form side can topple a team he knows well.

“Warwick in the past have been my nemesis team,” he said. “When I was at Nottingham University they beat us there.

“They are a well-organised team and that is their strength. [They have] some good players, but nothing to fear, but every player will need to be on their game if we’re going to progress.”

After relegation in 2016-17, the side have excelled in Ware’s first full season; unbeaten in all competitions, they lead the Midlands 3A league by four points and have scored 101 goals in their last eight matches.

Captain David Craig hailed Ware’s coaching as the key, saying: “Everything he does is for a reason. Sometimes we are wondering why we are doing this, but everything makes sense.

“It feels really professional every day; I can see why we are doing so well under him.”

The cup holds fond memories for Ware, having won it with Nottingham Trent University and come runners-up last year. However, he does not doubt where success with DMU this year would rank in his career highlights.

“It would probably be one of my greatest coaching achievements, considering where we started and the turnaround in the short space of time,” said Ware, who won back-to-back BUCS Premier League titles while coaching Nottingham Trent.

“People like David have shown me that that decision [to join DMU] was a good one.”

DMU Silverbacks Men’s 1st team next play University of Wolverhampton Mens 1st at the QEII Leisure Centre on Sunday, February 11 at 12.30pm, with the game free to watch.
