National Vegetarian weeks kicks off with GoVeggie fair at Guildhall

Last Saturday Leicester’s Vegetarian and Vegan society kicked off National Vegetarian week with their GoVeggie Fair.

The aim of the fair was to showcase Leicester as the centre of vegetarian living in the UK and Veggie Capital of Europe.

Carys Bennett, 34, an organiser of the fair was giving out free veggie hot dogs at the clock tower in a bid to persuade people to eat less meat.

She went on to say: “We want to establish Leicester as the Veggie capital of the UK and maybe even of Europe.

“Leicester has over 60 exclusively vegetarian restaurants, so it’s very vegetarian friendly and not many people know that.”

The fair which included stalls, demonstrations and talks at the Guildhall in the centre of town attracted many people.

Leicester based businesses used the opportunity to showcase their food and products, with samples on offer.

The society who is running events all week which include Veggie and Vegan speed dating at The Exchange as well as other free food events.

The aim of the society is to launch vegetarian friendly events and promote Leicester as a key veggie destination.

They group the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm at the Quaker Meeting House on Queen’s Road.
