Christmas lights switch on a big success

by Lauren Dewfall

The city’s Christmas lights were officially switched on in the crowded Humberstone Gate last night.

Former X-Factor winner Sam Bailey and Lord Mayor Councillor Stephen Corrall were on hand to switch on the 16,000 sparkling lights laid around the city centre this year.

The evening began with performances from local dance school Studio 79, Bullfrog Arts Choir and La Bella Ukulele band.

Alongside the several thousand lights, this year’s decorations also include a 50ft Christmas tree at the Clock Tower, an animated tableau scene celebrating the 12 days of Christmas in the Town Hall Square. The Bishop street side of the square features a winter woodland, giving a festive backdrop for the city’s traditional nativity scene and a special performance space for choirs and carol singers.
