This weekend the De Montfort University Student Choir will be taking part in the 5th annual University Gospel Choir Of The Year finals.

Gospel Choir Of The Year is an annual gospel choir, which was first started in 2011 and is held in London and, according to the Gospel Choir Of The Year website, the competition was inspired the 1993 blockbuster classic ‘Sister Act 2′.

The De Montfort Student Choir will be going against other five finalists who got through an x-factor style process. This year’s finalists are the University Of Leicester, Coventry University, Kingston University, University Of Surrey and Imperial College.

The winners of last year’s competition, the University of Nottingham, will also be coming back to defend their title but, according to a member of the DMU choir, they will walk away empty handed.

Group member Cachel Hamilton, a first year student at De Montfort University studying Accounting and Marketing, who was doing her shopping for what she was going to wear for competition, said “Nottingham are going back home with nothing but their hands, not to blow our own horns or anything but I think we bring it this year.”

The De Montfort University student will be wearing angel white tops to complement their angelic voices and black jeans. Cachel said they have been practising several times this week.

If you haven’t heard the choir sing I suggest you do so. The choir is always taking part in a number of events. For information on upcoming events such as Gospel Choir Of The Year check out their Facebook Dmu Student Choir page.
