Nintendo’s premier franchise is returning to the big screen with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Due for release on April 1, the movie sees Mario and friends return to the world of the first movie, adventuring into space and across the galaxy.

Produced by Illumination Studios and directed by the returning Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film will be based on the video games of the same name, and is a direct sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie.

After the global box office success of the first movie, Nintendo announced in March 2024 that a sequel was in the works.

In a video release on March 9, President of Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto said: “Since September of last year, we’ve been undertaking various initiatives for the 40th anniversary of Mario. This movie will be the centrepiece of the anniversary.

“Things happen one after another, without a chance to catch your breath. We hope you enjoy Mario and friends’ new adventure on the big screen.”

Returning to the cast are Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Anya-Taylor Joy as Peach, and most of the talent from the first movie. Newcomers include Donald Glover and Brie Larson, who add to an already star-studded cast.

During the same video release, the aforementioned Jack Black said: “This movie is huge. It’s galactic. The worlds are way bigger than I ever imagined they could be.”

This movie promises to be entertaining for all ages and demographics. As long as you are a fan of the Super Mario series, this movie could well be for you.

For those Leicester based, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be screening at the Odeon Luxe and Showcase cinemas from April 1. Tickets will start at £10.50 for general entry.
