Katie Stenner from Kenilworth, Warwickshire, has been tattooing for ten years. Recently, she has become a TATA Foundation tattoo artist, where she does paramedical tattoos helping individuals boost their confidence post-mastectomy. Molly Lee asked her a few questions about her work
How did you first get into tattooing in general?
I’ve always been fascinated by tattoos and art in general. After studying Art and Design at college, I was lucky enough to land an apprenticeship, which was my first step into the tattooing world.
How did you come across paramedical tattooing/mastectomy tattoos?
I had seen other tattoo and permanent make-up artists offering them and thought the work was incredible. It really stuck with me as something meaningful that I wanted to be involved in.
How many people have you done mastectomy tattoos for?
Since I began offering them in October last year, I’ve worked with around 15 clients—mostly women, but I also offer them for men. Anyone who’s had surgery that affected their chest can benefit from this type of work.
Could you explain about the TATA Foundation?
It is a charity that funds areola tattoos for clients who may not be in a position to pay privately. They sponsor trusted artists and allow us to provide one fully funded appointment per month. They’re an amazing organisation doing really important work.
What is it like doing these types of tattoos – is it quite rewarding or emotional?
Extremely rewarding, and definitely emotional at times. With most tattoos, it feels like I’m adding something new, but with areola tattoos, especially for clients who’ve had cancer, it feels like I’m restoring something that should never have been lost. It’s a different kind of impact.
What is the general feedback from clients who get a post-mastectomy tattoo? What does it mean to them?
For many, it’s the final step in a long and exhausting journey through treatment. These tattoos often bring a sense of closure and normalcy. Missing one or both nipples can be a daily reminder of everything they’ve been through. Restoring them can lift a huge emotional weight. It’s an absolute honour to be involved in someone’s healing journey.
