5, 6, 7, wait: Steps musical Here & Now is coming to Leicester’s Curve theatre next year

UK dance-pop icons Steps have announced that their musical Here & Now will come to Leicester’s Curve theatre next year as part of a UK and Ireland tour, writes Heidi Adam.

Here & Now will feature the group’s biggest hits including 5,6,7,8, Tragedy and Chain Reaction as well as many more to soundtrack the story of Caz, a seaside superstore employee who dreams of a summer of love, only to be met with lies, betrayal and … yes, tragedy.

The musical is produced by the band themselves alongside theatre company Royo, Pete Waterman and Fascination Management. It’s directed by Rachel Kavanaugh and choreographed by multi-award winner Matt Cole.

The musical first opened at Birmingham’s The Alexandra in November last year, and became the fastest selling show in the venue’s history, with half the available tickets for the three-week run snapped up within 24 hours. Casting for the musical’s UK and Ireland tour is yet to be announced.

Steps (Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee) are amongst the UK’s most successful pop groups to emerge from the ’90s, racking up four number one albums, 22 million record sales and 11 sold-out national arena tours.

The band made their comeback in 2017 with a series of gigs which sold out all 300,000 tickets, making it one of the most successful pop tours of that year. Since then, they have continued to release music such as their 2020 record What the Future Holds and their 2022 greatest hits compilation Platinum Collection.

“It’s a really wonderful feeling to actually sit in the audience and enjoy the music that we’ve been singing for 27 years,” said Lisa Scott-Lee during the musical’s run in Birmingham. “We’re usually the ones singing our songs on stage – it’s a really wonderful feeling to enjoy the music, I’m so proud of everybody.”

Here & Now will be playing at Curve theatre from Tuesday, April 28 to Sunday, May 3 next year. Tickets are on sale now, ranging from £10 to £52. For more information and to book, visit www.curveonline.co.uk or call 0116 242 3595.
