Culture Kick: Daina Allimadi

Students on De Montfort University’s Music, Film and Entertainment Journalism module pick the films, plays, music, TV shows and books that shaped them

My favourite film

Think Like A Man is the perfect rom-com.  Family Fortunes host Steve Harvey writes a book to help women understand their men better by acting like a lady but thinking like a man. My favourite scenes are when Kevin Hart shouts at his ex-wife over the phone.

The last film I saw

I recently rewatched The Social Network to help me find inspiration for my script writing module. Andrew Garfield’s meltdown as Eduardo Saverin is my favourite part. It was so unexpected but completely justified since he just found Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, had screwed him over.

The worst film I saw

Call Me By Your Name. The soundtrack is beautiful, and it alone is a masterpiece. Armie Hammer, however…

My favourite TV show

I adore Abbott Elementary; each character in the show is hilarious in their way. The comedic timing from the teachers to the students is unmatched. The recent pop culture references may be deemed as cringe to some, but I love it nonetheless.

The TV show I’m currently binging

I am re-watching the Netflix series ‘YOU’. Joe Goldberg is a fascinating character; the refusal to take accountability for his actions is astonishing, and the merciless killings of anyone that he deems as a threat. Season 2 is the best as we meet Joe’s girlfriend, Love Quinn, and we slowly learn that Love is his soulmate.

My favourite song

Stay Ready/What a Life by Jhene Aiko featuring Kendrick Lamar has been my all-time favourite song for years. The interlude makes me ascend. I would do anything to listen to it for the first time.

The lyrics, I love

Sunny days, everybody loves them
Tell me, baby, can you stand the rain?
Storms will come
This we know for sure (this we know for sure)
Can you stand the rain?

Can You Stand the Rain by New Edition

The best gig I saw

I saw Masego perform in O2 Academy, Brixton in 2022. As a soloist, he made sure to keep the crowd entertained. He brought out his saxophone, and it was amazing. The crowd went insane for Tadow and were even singing it out of the venue. A fight broke out randomly outside the venue. Live Love London.
