DMU Islamic Society calls for volunteers for Ramadhan

By Molly Lee

DMU’s Islamic Society is calling out for volunteers to help during the month of Ramadhan this year.

Volunteers will help in the prayer rooms during Iftaar preparations by creating a welcoming and rewarding environment for everyone breaking their fast on campus.

Free food and drink will be supplied throughout.

Iftaar is the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset to break their fast during Ramadhan.

It is popular for the meal to start with some dates, followed by water for hydration and then various dishes.

This year’s Ramadhan is expected to begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, and to end on the evening of Sunday, March 30.

However, Ramadhan’s dates cannot be confirmed until closer to the time as it depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, as the Islamic calendar has 12 lunar months.

During the month, Muslims observe fasting, prayer and charity.

Alisha Umar, a first-year architecture student, is a member of the society and frequently volunteers.

“This is my first year away from my family and friends so the society kind of gives me that family and helps me to stay connected with my religion,” said Alisha.

Nur Ulhuda, a first-year forensics science student, found out about the society during freshers week and is volunteering during Ramadhan with her friends.

“Having the night prayer is really nice because I know a lot of mosques don’t do that so having the university doing it is really nice,” said Nur. “Being part of it, as well, is really nice.”

The prayer rooms are open Monday to Friday from 8am until 9pm during term time at the Portland Building on DMU campus.

In 2023, the prayer rooms were refurbished for two months to be more accessible and to increase capacity.

For both Alisha and Nur, the society has helped them make friends, gain a sense of community and practice their faith.
