A campaign to change De Montfort University’s name has been launched.
A message was sent to all De Montfort students yesterday (NOV18) regarding a new campaign to change the name of the university.
The university is named after Simon De Montfort, who is commonly regarded as the father of modern day democracy, for helping found an early form of Parliament.
Some students however have pointed out the dark, lesser known side of Simon De Montfort.
De Montfort was also known for his anti-Semitic views that led to the expulsion and massacre of hundreds of the Jewish community in the 1200’s.
The De Montfort Students’ Union team is now requesting that the university pledges to start the work that will lead to a name change by December 2023.
Any questions can be emailed to dsuexec@dmu.ac.uk , and more information can be found on the Students’ Union website.
