BBC Radio Leicester legend Martin Ballard retires

By Harry Shellard

Last Sunday (OCT18) BBC radio Leicester legend Martin Ballard decided to call time on his 37-year broadcasting career.

Sunday was an emotional day for Martin and the thousands of listeners who tune in daily to his show, as it was his final goodbye.

Martin endured huge success during his extensive career which included Sports commentary of the Leicester tigers and his afternoon show which was so popular with listeners from across the county and beyond.

Martin’s popularity was due to his constant interactivity with listeners and his witty humour, which helped him build an instant rapport with many over the years.

Last Friday, Martin had this to say on twitter:

‘After 37 years at the BBC, mostly BBC Radio Leicester, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to take voluntary redundancy. It has been a sad & difficult decision to make & will feel very strange for some time.’
