Confucius Institute to put on Mandarin taster

An interactive Mandarin session is taking place at De Montfort University (DMU) next Monday, March 4.

The event, which is part of the university’s Festival of Teaching, will take place in room 1.13 of the Vijay Patel Building from 2 – 4pm.

It will help learners grasp basic Mandarin phrases, and is open to either beginners or those wishing to refresh their knowledge of the language.

Oliver Taylor, a first year DMU journalism student, has been attending Mandarin lessons set up by the Confucius Institute since January, and encouraged anyone interested to give it a go, regardless of how well they know the language.

Oliver, who has been learning for ten years, said: “I think Mandarin, for a lot of people, can be very intimidating at the start, just because it’s so drastically different to English.

“But I would absolutely encourage anyone with any sort of interest. Just explore it, let yourself loose.

“The Confucius Institute is excellent; it’s a great class.”
