Market Square’s gets festive food transformation

By Ruairi O’Connor

Leicester’s New Market Square will be transformed into a festive food village for the city’s Christmas lights’ switch on this Thursday (November 22).

Food vendors will be taking over the square from midday until 10.30pm to dish up lunch, dinner, mulled wine and many other street food favourites, including some festive treats.

Alongside the food traders, there will be a drinks zone with everything from Christmas cocktails to a huge gin bar.

Local dance group Studio79 will also be entertaining the crowds, as will former X-Factor winner and ‘Peter Pan’ star Sam Bailey.

All of this comes before Lord Mayor Cllr Ross Grant starts the build up to the big event.

Max Bovingdon, 20, a first year finance and marketing student at DMU, said: “I’m really looking forward to the event.

“I’ve never lived right in the city before, so a big Christmas lights’ switch on is something I’ve never really been a part of.

“That coupled with the good food, the Christmas drinks and the overall atmosphere, I’m sure it will be an event to enjoy.”

The big flick of the switch takes place at 6.20pm, with ITV news broadcasting live so nobody across the region has to miss the event.

Any visitors can also visit Town Hall Square which, this year, is enchanted by an amazing ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Christmas display and a brass band playing Christmas carols to bring everyone into a festive mood.

The new market square is right next to Leicester’s covered outdoor market, which will close around 4pm to make way for all of the festivities.
