DMU Women’s Rugby make history to reach quarter finals of cup

For the first time in three years De Montfort University’s Women’s Rugby team has made it into the quarter final of their league cup.

The team faced fierce competitors in the shape of the University of Bedfordshire but DMU came through with a 65-5 win at home.

Captain Kate Whitfield said: “I’m so proud of the girls, to play a team that’s in the league above us and to beat them by such a huge points difference is fantastic, we certainly weren’t expecting it.”

DMU bounced back from their first league loss last week to deliver a fantastic performance against a team in a league higher than them.

Both teams were left with a nervous wait before the match had even begun, waiting for confirmation that the pitches were playable. Thankfully the conditions seemed to work in favour for the home side once play had begun.

With a 40-0 lead heading into half time, the home side were certain of a victory. All very impressive considering they have been coaching themselves for the eight weeks the team have been together.

Many of the team were completely new to rugby a few weeks ago, for some of them this was in fact their first game. To come away with the win was certainly a shock for the team.

Kate added: “To see all of our hard work paying off is really something, we haven’t had a coach so the experienced players have been coaching the freshers, it’s great to see us doing so well.

“Last week we were downhearted to have lost so it’s brilliant for us to bounce back in the way that we have and we can’t believe we’ve finally got through to the quarter finals of the cup after years of trying.”

A late fightback from Bedford certainly didn’t put DMU off their stride, as they added more points on the board to come away with an impressive win.

The ladies will have to wait until February before their next cup game where they will be facing Harper Adams university.
