Leicester residents angry at firework noise

By Sam Coleman

Leicester residents have expressed their anger at the noise coming from fireworks over the Halloween period.

Fireworks being set off throughout the city over the past week to the upset of some of the residents.

Daniel Wisbey, 22, of Upperton Road said: “I don’t mind fireworks as long as they’re in moderation, when they’re going off at one in the morning and I’m up early the next day it really winds me up.”

It is illegal for fireworks to be set off between the hours of 11pm and 7am, with exceptions for New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year where the cut off is 1am as well as bonfire night where the cut off is midnight.

Bradley Parsons, 23, of Braunstone Gate shared a view similar to that of Mr Wisbey’s, he said the people having these private firework shows were ‘stupid’ and had ‘no respect’ for the neighbours and other residents living in the area.

Mr Parsons also said: “Cities host bonfire nights and firework displays for those that enjoy them on specific occasions so why do people feel the need to set them off weeks before and sometimes even weeks after? It’s not fair for those that don’t like them.”

Ben Wheeler, 24, of Freemans Meadow however said: “Let people do what they want it’s Halloween and bonfire nights coming up what do residents expect? As long as they’re not going off at silly o’clock it doesn’t bother me.”

The Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service are urging people to stay safe this bonfire night, be it at a public display or privately held event, promoting the ‘celebrate safely’ campaign.

The campaign reminds people to avoid leaving rubbish or old furniture lying around bonfires and to keep it securely away from your house and any trees.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by going to a display, however if you hold a private showing, fireworks are to be kept away from children, locked away when not in use and purchased from a proper supplier.
