Changes to improve accessibility and diversity are paying off for the women’s basketball team at De Montfort University which is spearheading a recruitment campaign for new players.
From new talent on the team to citywide investments in facilities and diversity, Leicester’s sports scene is alive with new life.
With facility improvements, more participation, and a growing sense of pride within the city’s athletic community, Leicester’s sporting spirit is reaching new heights.

Collaboration and perseverance are propelling progress from the courts at De Montfort University to the professional arenas in Leicester.
The DMU women’s basketball team, which has achieved incredible progress on and off the court, is at the heart of this movement. The team has become more ambitious, inclusive, and powerful under coach Em’s direction.
Coach Em, who is actively seeking new players, said: “We’ve laid a solid base, but we’re prepared to expand. Come train with us and be a part of something amazing, regardless of your level of basketball experience.”
“The changes have made a huge difference,” added Amina Patel, a student studying business management who is also club captain.
“We’re creating a true team culture where everyone feels encouraged, not just improving our performance.”
Additionally, DMU Sport has made significant investments to increase accessibility and diversity, as seen by an increase in female participation in a number of clubs.
Leicester’s larger sports culture, meanwhile, is thriving because of collaborations with professional clubs including the Leicester Riders basketball club and innovative community initiatives that support wellness and health.
The DMU women’s basketball club meets twice weekly for training sessions at the QEII Leisure Centre, with improved facilities, fresh fitness regimes, and team-building exercises that have improved morale and output.
