Gigs for Gaza to return to Leicester for weekend of solidarity

By Amelia Harris

Gigs for Gaza returns to Leicester this month for a weekend of solidarity, with three nights of music held at The International, in aid of Palestinian relief charities, homeless aid organisations, and the city’s workers union.

It kicks off with Tube Bar at 9pm tomorrow (Fri,JAN16) with music spanning multiple genres such as northern soul and indie, in aid of One Roof Leicester and the Bridge.

This will be followed on Saturday with Gigs for Gaza beginning at 2pm.

Alex, one of the event organisers, said: “The event is a full day dedicated to Palestine, with art, music, and speeches.”

This second day will support Medical Aid for Palestine and the Palestine Red Crescent Society. Alex added: “Both charities help Palestinians in frontlines with health services and support.”

The weekend concludes with the Funk Against Racism event at 1pm on Sunday, with a day of soul music, speeches, and stalls in support of Leicester’s Trades Union Council.

Unlike the last Gigs for Gaza event, the weekend of solidarity encompasses other efforts such as homelessness and workers’ rights.

Alex said: “The event is about love in general, not only about Palestine.”

The events are not just about the music. Through the speeches, the Leicester-based team aim to leave people “knowing more about how they can help Palestine and how their issues relate to ours,” Alex added, urging, “Come to our gig, we will help.”

Tickets for the weekend’s events cost £10 on the door or online at £7 for the individual event, and £15 for all three gigs.
