Broughton Astley woman shocked by unsafe atmosphere during trip to Japan

By Erin-Rose O’Leary

A tourist has spoken of her shock after experiencing what she described as both discriminatory treatment and a feeling of being unsafe during a trip to Japan.

Ava Painter, from Broughton Astley, was surprised by cultural differences she encountered and specific attitudes towards women.

She said she was stunned by scenes of drunk businessmen sleeping in the streets of Tokyo at night, which made her feel personally unsafe in a city often perceived as impeccably secure.

This personal account from the Far East provides a starkly contrasting view to the typical tourist experience we see advertised.

Ava said that while the country’s beauty was undeniable, the cultural shock regarding gender roles and nighttime safety was overwhelming during her trip last October.
