Students on De Montfort University’s Music, Film and Entertainment Journalism module pick the films, plays, music, TV shows and books that shaped them

My favourite film
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013). The second instalment of Suzanne Collins’ gripping dystopian. If you asked my mum, she’d tell you that I must’ve watched this film 50 times.
The last film I saw
Kinky Boots: The Musical (2019), a filmed version of the popular stage musical based on the life of Steve Pateman, a shoemaker from Northampton. It’s super camp.
My favourite TV show
RuPaul’s Drag Race. 10s across the board. It’s the Olympics for drag queens. I will never not love this show. (I’m also a huge fan of POSE and Derry Girls, they’re both iconic)
TV show I’m currently binging
Waterloo Road. It’s a little cringey sometimes but I love the drama.
The book I’m currently reading
The House of Hidden Meanings: A Memoir by RuPaul, THE queen of drag. “Because reading is what? FUNDAMENTAL!”
My favourite plays
A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Wiliams and My Son’s A Queer by Rob Madge
The lyrics I love
Party 4 u by Charli xcx
1000 pink balloons, DJ with your favourite tunes. Birthday cake in August, but you were born 19th of June. Champagne pourin’ in your mouth, called your friends from out of town. Got the party bag with the purple pills and I’m waiting for you by the window, yeah. Called your digits, but the phone kept ringin’. Wish I knew what you were thinking. 1000 pink balloons, dancin’ on to your favourite tunes. Hope you walk in the party, ’cause I threw the party just for you.
My favourite albums
Sweetener by Ariana Grande, Brat by Charli xcx, SOS by SZA, Scarlet by Doja Cat, Positions by Ariana Grande, and Crash by Charli xcx. I rarely listen to male artists – the ladies do it better.
The best gig I saw
Are you ready for it? Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. Nothing will top The Eras Tour. Nothing.
