Leicester City Council will tonight(THU,JAN16) be urged to put pressure on the government to take immediate action to help residents get access to proper healthcare and to improve primary care services in Leicester.
Councillor Zuffar Haq will highlight a BBC analysis which reported Leicester has the second worst GP patient ratio in England, with 3,262 patients per GP.
He says Leicester has a 40 per cent child poverty rate and one of the worst life expectancy differentials between city and county, with many people suffering with poor health and high levels of deprivation.
He gives an example of how, since the closure of the GP surgery in Evington village, patients who are unwell or who are elderly that have no way of getting around, will have to take four buses to visit their nearest GP.
He wants the city council tonight to agree to a motion to write to the Secretary State for Health and NHS England asking them to take immediate action to improve primary care services in Leicester.
He also wants the government to take constructive action within eight weeks.
