Young woman speaks out about Leicester’s nightlife scares

A Leicester teenager has revealed her growing anxiety about being harassed and facing catcalling by men when she and her friends go on a night out in the city.

Diana Ostojic, 18, enjoys going out with girlfriends but has had to endure different situations of men being touchy, physical or angry.

Worried: Diana Ostojic

“Going out is fun,” she said. “You get to dress up and have a drink and dance at the weekend with the girls, but it can be nerve-wracking.”

Outside Mosh in Leicester last summer, a bouncer had to get involved to help her from being harassed by older men, resulting in them becoming angry.

The situation escalated to a glass bottle being thrown at her head by the angered men.

Then, just a week ago, Diana was pestered by different men despite asking to be left alone to have fun with her friends.

She said catcalling is an increasing issue leading to women feeling sexualised and objectified.

She believes societal expectations and standards are changing, making men believe it is acceptable to treat women this way and give them excessive attention even when it is not wanted.
