Review: Daisy Jones and The Six. Chaos, nostalgia and rock’n’roll

Daisy Jones and the Six. Streaming on Amazon Prime.

Daisy Jones & The Six is a captivating series that effortlessly combines fun, chaos and irresistible melodies, making it nearly impossible not to fall in love with, writes Abbie Morgan.

I had never read the novel ‘Daisy Jones and The Six’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid but I couldn’t escape the constant advertisements for Amazon’s new adaptation. So, I thought I would at least give the TV series a try.

The show follows the iconic 70s rock band of the same name, fronted by free-spirited Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) and the difficult Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin) as it centres around their wild lifestyles.

After a sold-out show at Chicago’s Soldier Field, they call it quits. Now, decades later, the band members finally agree to reveal the truth about the sex, drugs, and rock‘n’roll (plus alcoholism, tragedy, love and heartbreak)..

The series is set in a documentary format which flits between the present day and flashbacks to the past. It starts in the late 60s, when a band of high school pals The Dunne Brothers are struggling to make their mark in the music business. But when they bring in singer-songwriter Daisy Jones, their fortunes change dramatically.

Keough is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley, and my first thought was yet another nepo baby getting fast-tracked into the Hollywood acting industry. Would she join the long line of disappointing performances by the offspring of stars, like Scott Eastwood and Hero Fiennes Tiffin?

I was pleasantly surprised by Keough. Those blue suede shoes are hard to fill but she didn’t tarnish the Presley name with her performance. Claflin and Keough have a great on-screen chemistry that’s fun for the audience to watch.

The binge-worthy series was released in parts much to my horror as I could’ve easily watched the entire show in a day.

Daisy Jones & The Six captivates not only through its stunning visuals, which brim with period feel, but with an album that pays homage to the era and specifically Fleetwood Mac.

Audiences can also relish in the fact that the impressive cast really plays their own instruments and sing.

Fans can immerse themselves in the captivating melodies and download or stream the all-new tracks, transporting them back to the magic of the decade.
