Joseph McCarthy becomes first title holder of the Demon Movie Championships

By Abi Willock

A canny first year film studies and media student battled through various rounds of tough questions to become the first title-holder of a movie quiz championship held by student radio station Demon FM.

PROUD: Joseph with his title belt

As a first year film studies and media communications student, Joseph McCarthy may have seemed a likely winner, but the battle last Tuesday(MAR1) evening was harder than expected, he said.

“When I was first asked to be on the show I had no idea what I was going in for.

“I thought I’d just be sat answering some film questions but it wasn’t like that, it was very serious, like something out of gladiators.”

After winning a qualifying match, Joseph entered the championship and endured some rather creative quiz rounds from hosts Ciaran Shea and Jack Davies, including ‘Wolf of Wall Beats’ and the aptly named ‘Pitch Invasion’, for which Joseph was tasked with creating a pitch for a film about Nina Simone, featuring a giant baby.

The topics may have been bizarre, but Joseph aced them, and after a lengthy deliberation from the judges, he won the Pitch Invasion, topping up his points and making him the overall champion.

Joseph, who describes himself as being shy at times, said getting involved in the show was something he really enjoyed and that he felt at home with the other members of Demon FM.

“It was very lively in the studio, everyone was passionate about what they were doing and I felt very comfortable,” he said. “I felt like I was in my zone and with my people because they were talking about stuff that I knew.”

Demon FM to launch Jaz Hour

By Abigail Willock

Demon FM, De Montfort University’s student radio, is set to launch new show Jaz Hour at the end of the month centered around student advice and wellbeing.

It is being launched especially to help first years navigate their way around university life.

Co-hosts Joseph McCarthy, a film and media productions student, and journalists Zoe Graham and Abi Willock first met when they joined Demon FM.

Having gained the skills to present their own show through Demon workshops, they decided they wanted to launch their own show that would be beneficial to other students, as well as building on their personal skillsets.

Joseph said: “Demon FM has always welcomed me and made me feel part of something.

“I really want to get into a career in media production and having my own show is going to give me invaluable experience in that field.”

Zoe explained that the main aim of the show is to talk about student wellbeing and give advice to first years, with the help of student special guests.

She said: “Jaz hour will be an hour of student news, views and advice, integrated with pop culture and some good music.”

Joseph added: “The show will basically be a standard breakfast talk show, but specifically aimed at students as they get used to life at university.”

Some topics the show will cover include the wellbeing services available at the university, the various societies available and news from the DSU such as student elections, as well as lighter topics such as film, music and pop culture.

Demon FM is available online and listeners can tune in to the premier of Jaz Hour at 10am on Friday, October 28.
