Moving Together, a dance company based in the East Midlands, are running volunteer sessions in partnership with De Montfort University (DMU) to encourage community involvement in the arts.
Moving Together’s website states: “Our mission is to provide opportunities for participants of all ages and abilities to experience dance.”
Emma Savage, 20, a second year dance student and one of the volunteer’s from DMU, said: “I help them with their sentence structure and thinking creatively and then demonstrate and help out in the practical class.
“I’m really enjoying it because it’s showing me a different side to the working life of a dancer which is what I could potentially be doing after university.
“It feels great to encourage more young people to engage with the arts and dance can be so rewarding.”
The sessions were open for all year six, seven and eight children in the Leicester area to sign up to, working towards their Arts Award.
The Arts Award supports young people engaging with the arts while building creative and leadership skills all leading towards a national qualification.
A Monday evening session involves an hour and a half working on computers in the DMU Hugh Aston building and an hour and a half practical dance class.
The sessions will conclude with a summer showcase by all students to demonstrate what they’ve learnt.
